What cannot be automated—at least not yet—is intent. The clear articulation of what should happen, under what constraints, with what governance. The understanding of business context that makes a solution valuable rather than merely functional.
But I have to be honest about what the evidence shows.
The most rigorous study found AI tools slow experienced developers down. Code quality metrics are declining. The SaaS disruption has not yet materialized at scale. The “Intent Architect” and “AI Orchestrator” roles remain more theoretical than established.
The thesis of this paper is not a description of current reality. It is a description of the direction of travel—and a warning that the alternative is worse. Vibe coding has already produced production disasters. The choice is not between AI and no-AI. The choice is between disciplined intent engineering and chaotic vibe coding.
The future of software is not written; it is specified. Applications are generated, used, and discarded—all in the service of intent.
The winners of the next decade will be those who can articulate intent with precision and orchestrate context with security.
That is the dissolution of syntax.
But the dissolution is incomplete, the transition is messy, and the evidence is genuinely mixed. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
